Women’s Vulnerability to Climate Change

Climate change is an enormous challenge that affects people and communities worldwide. But here's the thing: it doesn't impact everyone in the same way.

It's crucial to recognize that women face specific vulnerabilities when it comes to climate change. In this article, we'll delve into why women are more vulnerable to climate change and explore ways to empower them in adapting to these challenges.

Women's vulnerability to climate events depends on social, economic, and cultural factors

Limited access to resources: Women often have limited access to resources such as land, credit, and decision-making structures. This hinders their ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change effectively.

Existing gender inequalities in education, mobility, and political and economic status make it more challenging for them to cope with and recover from climate-related events.

Increased workload: During extreme weather events like droughts and floods, women often bear the brunt of the increased workload required to secure household livelihoods. They may have to take on additional responsibilities in securing food, water, and fuel.

Health risks: Climate change can have adverse health effects, and women may face additional health risks due to their biological and social roles.

Limited mobility: Societal norms and childcare responsibilities can hinder women's mobility, making it difficult to access resources for economic adaptation and empowerment.

Violence: Climate change can amplify gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence, human trafficking, unorganized migration and child marriage.

80 per cent of people displaced by climate change are women, according to UN Environment

Empowering Women for Adaptation

While women are often seen as victims of climate change, they can also be active agents of adaptation and mitigation. Throughout history, women have developed knowledge and skills related to water harvesting, food preservation, and natural resource management. Their wisdom, passed down through generations, holds valuable insights for enhancing adaptive capacity and sustaining communities' livelihoods. To improve women's adaptive capacity, we need to consider the following recommendations:

1. Gender-Specific Impacts: Adaptation initiatives must address gender-specific impacts of climate change in areas like water, food security, agriculture, energy, health, disaster management, and conflict. Addressing inequalities in resource access is essential.

2. Inclusive Decision-Making: Integrate women's priorities into development planning and funding, involving them in decision-making processes. Gender-sensitive investments in adaptation, mitigation, technology transfer, and capacity building are crucial.

3. Gender-Responsive Technologies: Consider women's circumstances when developing climate change adaptation technologies, removing barriers that hinder their benefits. Involve women in technology development for appropriateness and sustainability.

4. Mainstream Gender Perspectives: Incorporate gender perspectives into national policies, strategies, and plans for sustainable development and climate change. Ensure women's active participation in shaping initiatives.

These steps empower women to adapt to climate change challenges and address the intertwining threats of gender inequality and climate change.
