INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2023
#EMBRACEEQUITY

International Women's Day (IWD) celebrates women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and calls for gender equality. It originated from the women's suffrage movement in the early 1900s. IWD is currently a global celebration of women's contributions in various fields, besides serving as an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges women face, such as gender-based violence and unequal pay. It is celebrated annually on March 8th with various events worldwide, providing a platform to reflect on progress and renew the commitment to advancing women's rights.

However, the reality of gender equality is not as glamorous. As reported by UN Women, at the current rate of progress, it will take up to 286 years to close legal protection gaps and remove discriminatory laws. It will take 140 years for women to achieve equal representation in leadership positions in the workplace, and 40 years for the same in national parliaments. Progress needs to be 17 times faster to eradicate child marriage by 2030, with girls from poor rural households and conflictaffected areas expected to suffer the most.
